(Roma) Guardia corsa

Un'emigrazione còrsa più massiccia verso Roma cominciò lentamente nel XV secolo. La Corsica, ufficialmente parte del regno di Sardegna e Corsica, era sottoposta nominalmente all'autorità papale. Nel 1444 sbarcò sull'isola, inviata da papa Eugenio IV, un'armata pontificia forte di 14.000 uomini, che fu però sbaragliata dalle milizie còrse controllate da Rinuccio da Leca, a capo di una lega che raccoglieva quasi tutti i caporali e i baroni locali. Una seconda spedizione fu invece vittoriosa e Rinuccio stesso cadde ucciso in battaglia di fronte a Biguglia.
Tra il 1468 e il 1471, quattro compagnie di cavalleria pesante composta da cavalieri còrsi furono arruolate dal Papa.

Jinetes

Alfonso V ha usato dei contingenti di jinetes nella guerra di conquista del Regno di Napoli.
The javelin was very popular in Spain and was the principal weapon of the jinete. It is referred to by Froissart as la darde enpenné or jetan darde, the winged or throwing dart. He and others refer in addition to a light lance called an archegay which was also clearly a throwing weapon, which some have associated with the lancegay (lance agüe or launcegay, a type of short, light lance, sometimes thrown, introduced in the 14th century), while others have associated it with the assegai (derived from the Berber azagal). The shield is an adarge, usually constructed of several folds or layers of leather glued and sewn together. By the 15th century it might also be made of wood, and later even of steel.

Lanzeros

The helmet is of a type called a cabacete or capacete, halfway between a sallet and a chapel-de-fer and very popular in Spain among soldiers of all classes. It was usually worn in conjunction with a deep bevor called a barbote which sometimes covered the whole face, in which case it had eye-slits.
His lance is lighter than those used in France and England and could either be couched or wielded overarm, sometimes held in both hands. Where shields were carried they either took the rectangular form or were still of the almost parallel-sided, round-bottomed type, the Adarga. Descriptions of Castilian cavalry at the Battle of Olmedo in 1445 tally closely with the appearance of this figure. They are reported to have worn surcoats of this type ('short capes') made of silver- and gold-embroidered silk or velvet, and their armour is said to have been decorated.

possono essere usati in due versioni: una leggera - ci sono le illustrazion del Basinio - in cui si vedono dei giavellottieri con scudi piccoli e quadrati - e una più pesante di fanti con il tipico scudo moresco (Adarga, versione spagnola per "targa") e una lancia, come dei targonieri.

"Ogni lancia deve essere composta da tre uomini, tutti a cavallo, fra i quali l'uomo d'arme propriamente detto, un combattente ausiliario detto coutillier e un paggio. [...] L'uomo d'arme dovrà avere un'armatura completa, con celata a baviera o barbuta, una gorgiera, uno stocco lungo, rigido e leggero, un coltello tagliente appeso al lato sinistro della sella e una mazza al lato destro, un cavallo munito di frontale e di barda in grado di correre e di rompere la lancia. [...] L'uomo d'arme è autorizzato a procurarsi un quarto cavallo per il trasporto dei bagagli."
Le compagnie di "gendarmi" furono tra le prime forme di unità professionali, introdotte in Francia da Carlo VII nel 1445.

[...] I Triestini, con 200 cavalli e 1.000 scopettieri carinziani inviati dall’imperatore Federico III d’Asburgo, compiono numerose sortite ma si ritrovano presto a corto di viveri. [...] Federico III premia Trieste per l’eroica resistenza concedendo [a Trieste] un nuovo stemma con l’Alabarda ed i colori dell’Austria"

Écuyers Savoyards

"Fin dal tempo di Amedeo VII (1383-1391), chiamato il Conte Rosso per il colore che egli prediligeva nel suo abbigliamento, i regnanti di Savoia si sono dotati di un corpo di scudieri a cavallo. Costoro, comandati da un capitano e con tre trombettieri, tutti savoiardi, espletano le funzioni militari degli addetti alla persona del Conte di Savoia, affiancando gli arcieri a cavallo e la cavalleria pesante. Arcieri e scudieri dipendono dapprima dal Maestro di Palazzo, poi dal Gran Scudiero. Il primo ordinamento regolare del complesso della Casa Ducale è contenuta nei "Decreta seu Statuta" del 1430 di Amedeo VIII, primo Duca di Savoia".

Gli "arcieri a cavallo" sono da ritenere ispirati ai francs-archers: truppe di arcieri che montano a cavallo per spostarsi rapidamente nelle marce, ma combattono a piedi.

Prima Cernea Servientum

"Teodoro, marchese di Monferrato e figlio dell'imperatore bizantino, prende provvedimenti contro quelle comunità che non hanno inviato un adeguato contingente di fanti (cernea servientum o prima cernea) in Pontestura." Si tratta della "prima scelta" della leva feudale.

Andreas Pavias was one of the most important painters at Irakleion, Crete (under Venetian dominion), in the second half of the 15th century. His contemporaries appreciated his work and this is demonstrated by the fact that he is mentioned as a "magister", as teacher of art and of letters.



One horseman on the left is shown as pitch black, the man with sponge and the man on the right hand ladder appear to be African. A prominent figure at right centre has a Mamluk fluffy red zamṭ. A few other zamṭs can be seen in the crowd.

Two armoured men (upper-left and centre) have pteruges at their shoulders. These are probably portraying Greeks. Others dressed similarly without pteruges may be as well, but could be Venetians.


The most heavily armoured men with closed helmets may be Venetians or similar westerners. Others are less well armoured in brigandines buckled at the front or back.

The figure that probably represents the centurion has plate leg and arm harness with gauntlets and sabatons and a sallet with a turban around it.

At upper left appears a tartar in a red hat with a split pointed brim. To his right is a hemispherical red cap with a point. In front and to the left of these is a horseman in a hemispherical white cap with a long point. This type of hat may fit a description by Doukas of Ottoman hemispherical caps with a point a hand-span high, red for turks and white for the Sultan's servants. Another white cap can be seen at far right.


Just to the left of the base of the cross, a horseman wears a hat with a ribbed crown with similarities to the Byzantine Emperor John VIII Paleologus' hat by Pisanello, but here it is given a split brim.

1- Tzakones (light infantry)

Tzakones, or Lakones, as Pachymeres and gregoras thought they should properly be called, were those men whom Michael VIII transplanted from Mores, at first perhaps only from Momnevasia, later from other parts of the Morea - these being ethnic tzakones - to serve as marines, light-armed troops to guard the walls of the city and, as we learn from other sources, even as a division of palace guards.
Tzakones who served as bodyguards were armed with clubs or cudgels (apelatikia) and, according to Pseudo-Kodinos, wore distinctive sky-blue surcoats (epano klivana ieranea), adorned with two white lions face-to-face (leontas istamenous leukous, orontas antikry kata prosopon).
The profession of Tzakon was - at least occasionally - hereditary, as gregory of Cyprus mentions the Tzakones by "genos".

2- Mourtatoi (foot archers)

Pseudo-Kodinos asserts that they fought an foot as archers. he word “Mourtatoi" itself ought to derive from the Arabo-Turkish word “murtedd”, ”murtat” meaning “apostate” or “renegade” and it has generally been thought that the Mourtatoi were therefore Christianized Turks. However, a passage in the “Advice for and Overseas Passage” makes a slight revision of this view: “They are descendants of Turks by one parent and of Greeks by the other [...] Although they are called Christians, they are quite foreign to christian worship and works, and without exception given to the exercise of arms, for they have no other occupation. [...] No exercise of arms that requires a faithful, vigosous and steady warrior includes them, but rather thaft, destruction and rapine".
