. Although the Milanese ruled Lombady for much longer, the state was created in 1395, when it included twenty-six towns. TERRITORYThe territory encompassess a large portion of north Italy: in the north the Duchy of Milan controls the southern alpine passes, bordering the
Grey League, the
Swiss Confederates and the Bishopric of Sion; in the west it borders the
Duchy of Savoy and the Marquisate of Montferrat. On the south-west it borders the Republic of Genoa and the mountainous lands of the Marquisate of Malaspina, while protruding on the south-east to encompass Piacenza and Parma, bordering the Marquisate of Este. In the east the borders are turning into a frontier - apart for the Marquisate of Mantua, the land between Brescia and Verona is highly contested by Milan and Venice, who is conquering fast lands that until few years ago pertained to others.
